Welcome to the PHPVT blog, managed by both Trevor and Ashley (de.monkeyz). Come here for updates on the site, future video ideas as well as the occasional developer tip!

Status of PHPVT

Quite a few people have shown interest in our rebirth, now that we’ve begun to stir a little; for example setting up all of our social pages and releasing our first video. So we’re getting a few people asking when we’ll go fully live, which is essentially when we get rid of our current splash page and move everything from our /paths/ folder to the root.

Before I get into the specifics of when we expect to launch, I just want to run by what we’ve accomplished so far, and what needs to be done, just to give you an idea of the current progress as a whole. So, to start on a bright note, what have we accomplished?

Well first of all, you’ve all probably seen the brand new site interface I’ve been working on (with input from Trevor as I progressed), inspired by the DNN system I invented a while back with a little RPG skill tree flare to it. At the moment it’s pretty much 99% functional, the only thing not implemented is the donation system which is what is stopping us from pushing forward. Now, that might imply that we don’t want to release PHPVT until we can make money, but this is not the case. The donation system (which you might have read on the new page) is going to be setup in such a way that your donation goes towards one of the learning paths we’re going to set up. Examples of these are on the current tester page: Databases, User Data, and Object Orientated Programming. There’ll be a few more of these, including a pseudo-path called “Applications” in which we’ll use knowledge from the paths to create a working PHP application/site. Donating to these paths will tell us that these are what people want, meaning we’ll record more of those videos. So in simple terms your donation goes towards exactly what you want.

But forget about the donations for now, we’ll be releasing the site before we get any, as we have the 6 core nodes- which are videos which simply equip you with basic PHP skills necessary for all other videos. One of these videos we’ve already released, and was narrated by both Trevor and myself, something we both really enjoyed and hope to more in the future (now that I have a better microphone). Not all videos will be co-hosted, mainly so we can produce them easily, thus more quickly. That and there’s certain areas I’d prefer to teach and the same goes for Trevor. The next 5 core videos is what we’re going to record next, and we’re hoping once we record and release those, we’ll push the site live.

So that’s where we are in terms of what’s been done, as you can see the vast majority has been done: the concept, the site, and the video ideas. We’ve just got to get our head downs, get recording and get releasing. I kind of grazed past what we haven’t done, but it’s essentially just the donation system, which might just be put on hold until after we release the core videos and the first video in each of the starting paths. So for now, thank you for reading and I look forward to seeing people talk about PHPVT once we go live.

Thanks, de.monkeyz.
